Poetry to Music
Duration: 45 minutes (Three to Five Day Residency)

Students will create a melody for a poem. At the end of the residency, students will understand the use of the voice to help contribute to meanings of songs. The students will identify and explain poetic elements: rhyming patterns, mood, tone, etc., that contribute to meaning. Students use the voice to improvise simple melodic phrases (such as scat singing, call/response, and blues) and sound elements of poetry (rhyme, no rhyme and rhythm).
Flip It!
Duration: 45 minutes (Three to Five Day Residency)
Age Group: Ranges from 5-8
Arts Integrated Lesson Description:
This residency introduces one element of songwriting- melody, by “flipping” American classics of rock, jazz and country into original melodies using contemporary hip-hop and R&B music. Tamara teaches the students that songs are the combination of melody, lyrics, and music. She cleverly integrates reading strategies, such as inferring and challenges students to identify and explain words that create tone in a song. The culminating activity is the children’s presentation of the classic song with a rearranged melody and music performed with a musical track.
